Now that the xi-editor project is dead are there any alternatives?

A backend server for a text editor seems like a really great idea. For example, I'm trying to make an API client and even having an embedded JSON editor would be a lot easier with something like xi. Now that the xi GitHub repo is no longer maintained are there any projects trying a similar approach?
