Codelite
I've recently started using [Lace](https://lapce.dev/) as a sort of barebones VSCode alternative and I find it nice for the hobbyist use case. It integrates with all the things I need, and other less mature features I bypass completely (I prefer to do Git from the terminal anyway).

Lightweight dev tools.
Here comes Lapce; a "Lightning-fast and Powerful Code Editor" written in Rust (are you seeing a theme here?). When they say "lightning-fast" they're not kidding. Despite the website saying it's "pre-alpha" it has a surprisingly full feature set:
- What’s an free bare bones IDE for Python that works smoothly out of the box?
-
VSCode Security: Malicious Extensions Detected- More Than 45,000 Downloads
thats why we need wasi/wasm bashed sandboxed plugins scoped bashed on capability it needs.
i think lapce supports wasi plugin but overall ux is not there yet when i last tried.

What setup do you use to program in rust?
I daily use Lapce. I like how much faster it is comparing to PyCharm + Rust plugin. While it misses some features of the large IDEs it does the minimal I need: helping with imports, go to definition, go to usages, renaming of the symbol multi-panel view, remote editing via SSH. And it's written in Rust, so I'm eager to contribute one day.

How to use an old laptop to learn programming?
If you want something even faster you could use Lapce instead of VS Code. It's similar to VS Code, but Lapce is written in Rust so it uses much less memory and runs faster.

rust-analyzer churning at 100% CPU, never stopping
I've had this problem many times since I only have a dual-core CPU on a laptop. Interestingly I've never encountered this issue with the Lapce, now this might be a fluke since I haven't used lapce nearly as much as vscode, but it's responsiveness compared to vscode is ridiculous. I often have to close vscode and let the laptop cool down, but never with lapce.

Helix (a Kakoune / Neovim inspired editor) 23.03
Helix is awesome, though once Lapce (spiritual successor to Xi editor) gets the Helix/Kakoune editing model, I may have to jump ship
