I did built-ins and using 1.5" thick boards (two 3/4 face glued) and I routed a channel about 2 inches back from the leading edge and installed SK6812 RGBW strips in aluminum channels with a diffuser. I routed tracks along the sides of the shelves and in the back of the vertical parts to run all the wires. Then I control box with an on/off switch, dimmer knob, and effects button that'll cycle through a few preselected WLED presets on an ESP32 microcontroller. Holding down the button for a second turns it back to white.
