You could also run your VPN and torrents in a Docker container. This is what I use, and the Docker-compose already includes qBittorrent. If you have no familiarity with Docker, though, it can be a learning experience.

  VPN client in a thin Docker container for multiple VPN providers, written in Go, and using OpenVPN or Wireguard, DNS over TLS, with a few proxy servers built-in.

For those that use docker and what some of their containers to use a VPN, gluetun is the best image I've found for it. Pretty straight forward, great dev, tons of features.
