I'm using IPvanish, but as long as your VPN supports Open VPN, you can use the docker image (https://github.com/haugene/docker-transmission-openvpn). In fact, the GitHub page shows an example of PIA.

I'm running the latest Ubuntu Server version (at the time of writing Ubuntu 20.04.2.0 LTS) and I've used Docker for installing all my apps being: Transmission Open VPN, Plex Media Server, Radarr, Sonarr, Bazarr, Portainer and Watchtower. Everything is (almost) working.

For VPN client (obfuscating traffic from your ISP), you have a few options. 1) if your router has a VPN client config, you can set it up with your paid VPN service. 2) use a docker image that supports torrents and has a built in VPN client (fro example, https://github.com/haugene/docker-transmission-openvpn). The benefit here is that you don’t expose your NAS to the public internet, only the docker container. Also, many of these containers have a built in Privoxy server, allowing you to route any other NAS traffic through that VPN tunnel, so you only need that single VPN client running.
