What's the best option for isolating/sandboxing Steam and its games?

  • Distribution packages aren't official either. The only one that is is the .deb package from Steam website. Most distribution package just extract/repackage that, just like the flatpak. How this is done exactly you can see at any time in the Github repo where Flathub hosts the build instructions. Further, the flatpak actually has some indirect official support. If I recall correctly, Valve has contracted Collabora developers to improve many things surrounding the Steam flatpak, like implementing sub-sandboxing, which finally enabled the proper use of Proton within the flatpak version of Steam.

  • That being said, I'm afraid LightDM would still run Xorg as root (the setting allows Xorg to be run as non-root, it doesn't enforce it). I see there's an open issue to change that.
