I use this script from Github from a fresh EOS install (Base + Devel, no DE through the installer). Just pick all the options you want -- obviously if you don't pick something it won't work -- and you're mostly off to the races. Everything works except the switchboard-plug-mouse-touchpad which, would you believe, is the settings panel for mouse and touchpad. You need to git clone that and edit the meson_options.txt file to say option('gnome_40', type : 'boolean', value : true) (it defaults to false which makes it crash when opened). Just follow the build instructions on its page once you've done that edit.

You can also go for touchegg to get the gestures working and optionally the touche GUI if you want more granular configurations for gestures (I use it for back/forward navigation using three-finger left/right swipes).
