  • kitty

Cross-platform, fast, feature-rich, GPU based terminal

  • There is a closed github issue on kitty (the "infamous terminal app") where it seems clear that the telemetry in question is limited to checking for updates and that, while it is opt-out, turning it off is just a matter of configuration. I can only assume distros tolerate this kind of telemetry if they don't turn it off.

  • calibre

The official source code repository for the calibre ebook manager

  • As for Calibre, I could easily find build instructions (but did not try to build it on Alpine or anywhere else) so I would assume the author was just telling specific users who had trouble building to use the binaries instead. Beware: it's not like I am providing a true interpretation of sorts for the anecdote reported by u/3CX1500 (I did not even look for its source!) - I'm just assuming this based on my own preconceptions (that hopefully you'll label as "common sense").
