Did a little bit of digging. Currently, I am using key-mapper, it seems to be the simplest button re-mapper, has best compatibility, and least moving part if you just want something simple.
xbindkeys also required the use of xdotool which also doesn't work under wayland, but it seems that there is a replacement in ydotool and wtype. There is also autokey as an xdotool alternative which seems to be based on python.
