decomp has an equivalent to advance map called porymap. it's really not all that different to use. i checked your post history and you mention having trouble with adding new tiles in advance map, i can say from personal experience that adding new tiles in porymap is very easy.
scripting is something i have a lot less experience in, both in binary and decomp. from the little scripting i've done, writing in poryscript seems a lot like writing in binary script languages, except that you don't have to worry about offsets and free space. i think this is the main difference you'll find if you only make simple events.

not really, however if you want to freshen up the experience you can use the universal pokemon randomizer to shuffle pokemon around, give trainers and bosses 6 pokemon, force fully evolved, turn of trade evos, and many other features

So I made a TON of changes to Route 2 on Fire Red and after saving I can no longer open the rom? I don't know why it's doing this so I'm wondering if anyone here knows?
