Factory firmware for MZ1 or MZ2 printers is fork of Marlin 1.1.8 development version + several hacks by Anycubic engineers. If you want to stay on Marlin 1 firmware, you can take v1.1.9.1-kad1 tag from the same repo https://github.com/kad/Marlin/releases/tag/v1.1.9.1-kad1 and do your own changes on top and build with PlatformIO. v1.1.9.1-kad1 is clean upstream Marlin v1.1.9.1 release with config very close with what was in factory firmware published by Anycubic ( https://github.com/ANYCUBIC-3D/MEGA_ZERO ).
As a hobby, I maintain fork of upstream Marlin firmware for Mega Zero printer that I own: https://github.com/kad/Marlin/releases There is description of different build variants on releases page or on the wiki. On wiki there is page describing how to flash it. There is also page on how to use PlatformIO to build it from source, if you'd like to add some other changes in configs. Those releases support 3 different boards: stock 8bit "Melzi" board by anycubic, BigTreeTech SKR mini MZ (drop-in replacement for Melzi), SKR mini E3 and in development branch as well BTT SKR E3 Turbo board. Filenames are marked which firmware with which features and for which board or MZ1/MZ2 variants.
