Does this exist? A sort of open-sourced game where there were hundreds of developers contributing over the years? I understand graphics would be problematic in this case, so ASCII or text-based is fine!

  • NetHack

    Official NetHack Git Repository

  • I don't think I've ever seen one with hundreds of developers, but there are a lot of open source games that have had many contributors over the years. https://github.com/NetHack/NetHack is the most "famous" example that comes to mind.

  • warzone2100

Command the forces of The Project in a battle to rebuild the world after mankind has been nearly destroyed by nuclear missiles. A 100% free and open source real-time strategy game for Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD+

  • Warzone2100 Not nearly hundreds, but at 97 contributors it's still a very large project. Originally a paid game, the source code was made freely available after the original company went under, and has been driven by fans ever since.

  • InfluxDB

Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale. Get real-time insights from all types of time series data with InfluxDB. Ingest, query, and analyze billions of data points in real-time with unbounded cardinality.

OpenTTD is an open source simulation game based upon Transport Tycoon Deluxe

  • OpenTTD 119 contributors according to their Github. Also a very solid game.
