about signal suing people - haven't heard of it, need to look into that. but signal does have other clients, some are even on fdroid, like this one: https://github.com/mollyim/mollyim-android and there is honestly a tonn of signal forks and unconnected client implementations, including cli tools and daemons, i even use some myself for automated notifications
