You are much better off installing Pi-Hole for that sort of blocking instead of just using the /etc/hosts file.
One more thing to note is, that the hosts file will be bypassed when you use DNS over HTTPS (DoH) in your browser! See: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts/issues/968
