  • GitHub repo Pi-hole

A black hole for Internet advertisements

Project mention: Locked out of 'God Mode', Runners are hacking their treadmills | news.ycombinator.com | 2022-01-18

This is obviously wrong and should be blocked via laws, but just in case you're here and haven't heard of pi-hole (https://pi-hole.net/) taking internet-of-shit devices and blocking all the ways they try to access the net is kinda fun.

  • GitHub repo docker-pi-hole

    Pi-hole in a docker container

    Project mention: Domanins on blocklist .... -2 | reddit.com/r/pihole | 2022-01-05

https://github.com/pi-hole/docker-pi-hole/issues/610 The cause is, that the container needs specific user and group ids to be run at. If you are using persistent volumes these have to have the same uid and guid as the users running pihole. If that is not possible on the host, there is currently no way to fixing it. The dev team have to implement a environmental variable to set the uid and gid in the container itself. The workaround that works for me is to run it without a attached volume and just use the teleporter backup and restore when I’m rebuilding it.

  • GitHub repo hblock

Project mention: Self Hosted Ad Blockers? | reddit.com/r/selfhosted | 2022-01-14

Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, you can also load the blocklists directly onto your hosts. For example, hblock (https://github.com/hectorm/hblock) has a few scripts to format its blocklist for your platform. The StevenBlack list's github page has instructions for adding to a range of platforms and links to several hosts/blocklist managers (https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts). You can also point your router at an adblocking public DNS such as https://adguard-dns.com/en/public-dns.html (free) or https://nextdns.io/ (might cost). Lastly, depending on what router you run, you could load the host lists directly onto the router.

Project mention: Google has a secret deal with FB called “Jedi Blue” that they knew was illegal | news.ycombinator.com | 2021-10-24

that is way obsolete by now. you need to be using Brave with ublock origin, this dns service https://github.com/Ultimate-Hosts-Blacklist/Ultimate.Hosts.B... ClearURL's, HTTPS Everywhere, and Random User Agent. I also use whoogle for a local privacy enhancing filter of google data with all ad elements stripped out (and that is if I even use google I usually use ddg).
