They are tools to rollback to previous versions https://github.com/ddvk/remarkable-update so even some of the people who do automatically update (I don't precisely because of such risks) might be able to restore to a usable state. Still, it's not technically impossible but I don't think it's easy without significant change to the architecture, maybe even hardware changes.
