As for firmware updates ... you can upgrade the firmware "by hand", if you can find the firmware image files. I've always used a program called remarkable-update to update the firmware in my tablets, and RCU version "d2023.001(k)" (released within the last week or two) can also perform firware upgrades.
As for the firmware image files ... the filenames have a string of random characters at the end, which prevents people from being able to "just download them" from their servers. The JSON file in codexctl has a list of the "random character" parts of each filename, however it can take a week or two after each new release before this list is updated.
You can upload/download files from the cloud with rMAPI. You can also use rmFakeCloud to host your own sync cloud, so the files just go to your own computer/server. This works with rMAPI as well.
