I've had the same issue myself for a while. I used to use some free (GPL) virtual KVM software called Synergy, but at some point that was abandoned so I stopped using it. However, it looks like it's now been resurrected -- albeit as paid software. It looks like you can still get it for free if you're willing to compile it from source. Otherwise, the paid version is not prohibitively expensive. I haven't tried the new version yet, but will eventually give it a go...
I use Synergy RC 1.9 at https://github.com/amankhoza/synergy-binaries and I just download the kit and run it. I've been using Synergy since around 2009 for using multiple Macs or mixed Mac and Windows desktops.
