You're almost certainly welcome to take a look at Evennia's source code to see how they went about setting it up (Evennia has built-in telnet + websocket support, falling back on AJAX/COMET if the browser can't handle websockets). No need to reinvent the wheel from scratch if you can nab a roughly wheel-shaped block and carve it into what you want.
