outlines is a complex subject, there are few few suitable solutions out there. there's this: https://github.com/gkjohnson/threejs-sandbox/tree/master/conditional-lines but the code seems very complex. i've tried to untangle it once but i have no idea what's gong on.
I was able to add outlines to my instancedMeshes using a shehata-outline pass in the vanilla version of pmndrs post-processing
