Try DikuMUD if you want C. It's a classic, so will have the classic feel to it, but DikuMUD 3 is relatively new and includes a webclient, looks like the developer also has a discord so you can probably ask questions. https://github.com/Seifert69/DikuMUD3

https://github.com/bubthegreat/rom24 is a fork of the old rom codebase in python I’ve been poking at to get it running smoothly - it was partially completed but had a bunch of bugs - at this point it’s mostly running but way way easier to troubleshoot
