SaaSHub
SaaSHub - Software Alternatives and Reviews. SaaSHub helps you find the best software and product alternatives
I didn't last long with the stock keyboard before installing AnySoftKeyboard which is one of the few FOSS alternative with support for swipe typing. The experience was... OK. It felt slow and it's accuracy left a lot to be desired. I still had to be slow and pretty accurate, so it didn't really feel like much of a change from the stock experience. FlorisBoard have also introduced their own implementation but the feedback I read suggested it would be much the same as my experience with AnySoftKeyboard's gesture typing.

Project mention: EU Chief Calls on Apple CEO Tim Cook to Open Hardware and Software Ecosystem | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-09-26It's security is sub-par. If you're looking for secure app updates the Play Store is the way to go (if you're willing to compromise your privacy). They also use remote signing for apks (so, F-Droid builds then signs the APKs on behalf of developers).
One thing I'm hoping will pick up speed is Accrescent - https://accrescent.app/. It is in a very very alpha stage at the moment and only includes a handful of apps. It's built with security in mind from the get-go and doesn't compromise just to support lower, outdated/insecure android versions.
Project mention: Anytype – open-source, local-first, P2P Notion alternative | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-07-20GNU also misses the point a bit. With open source, the source is open, but some other general rights are included too, like to restriction to the type usage. Lately, people and corporations made a lot of money on the backs of open source developers, so a new type of license emerged, and this would be the one that really is just about the "open" "source", but to make it distinct from the already widely known term, people call these "source available". Getting back to the topic, Any knows these distinctions too - or at least their lawyer did, because they call their license a "Source Available License"[0]. Source-available however doesn't carry the coolness of what "open source" brings - so on the marketing page, they refer to the project as "open source", which kind of can be argued, since the majority of it is indeed proper open source.
