Just use a theme for twilight menu. You can’t change language of stock firmware on DSi.

There’s hiyacfw, which is like stock firmware, but it’s more tedious to put games on it (have to manually install them) and does not work well with larger SD cards formatted to fat32. I would recommend checking out themes if you haven’t already.

"put my roms on the start screen instead of inside the folders" there's your answer - instead of copying the .nds files inside the roms/nds folder, just copy them straight to the sd. Nothing is stopping you from doing that :). As far as themes are concerned - https://skins.ds-homebrew.com/

You can't change the arrangement of the icons on a grid. But you can add your own themes. https://skins.ds-homebrew.com/

Another thing worth noting is that TWiLight Menu++ updates a lot and has improved a lot over the years, so you may want to try updating it and see if you like the new version more. Depending on how outdated you were it may be a big improvement. There are also various skins you can use (or make your own) to change the look.

If the SD card is over 2 GB you probably just need to update hiyaCFW to fix that error. Or if you hold A + B while booting that should take you to the Unlaunch filemenu*, from there you can go to OPTIONS and set NO BUTTON to Launcher and it'll boot to the normal DSi Menu.

Just download the latest version and copy hiya.dsi from the for SDNAND SD card folder to the SD root to update.
