Downloading YouTube Private Videos
What I do is use a tool called tubeup. It will download a YouTube link you give it and automatically upload it to archive.org. It can take single videos or even whole playlists. That way, if it gets removed from YouTube, I know where to find it again, and I don't have to manage local copies or use up own cloud storage.

How to archive YouTube videos on the Wayback machine
I have tried the tubeup project but I spent most of the day trying to make that work but to no avail (I am working on macos Big Sur). I have also seen this post from what seems to be one of the staff, but it seems like a very long and complicated process to take just to archive YouTube videos.

Hopefully that saves someone some extra googling.
For more hardcore automated archival, I do this on linux (which doesn't have the character length issues) and I'd recommend looking at the following for inspiration

Format code for browser playback compatibility
I am trying to play some videos downloaded with yt-dlp on my local web server. However, because of the codecs my current format code chooses when downloading I have noticed a number of videos will not play within in a web browser. My current format code is based on TheFrenchGhosty's youtube-dl script collection which chooses codecs for quality at the cost of compatibility.

Noobie needs help making a config file for yt-dlp
Note that this option is somewhat broken. At least it was for years. For this reason, there are extra scripts that try to grab the actual best video + audio like https://github.com/TheFrenchGhosty/TheFrenchGhostys-Ultimate-YouTube-DL-Scripts-Collection

Youtube-dl Hosting Ban Paves the Way to Privatized Censorship
If you want to do complicated bullshit, like setting up automated downloading of channels for archiving, then I recommend this: https://github.com/TheFrenchGhosty/TheFrenchGhostys-Ultimate-YouTube-DL-Scripts-Collection : Initially might seem confusing, this is a good set of scripts for looking at how yt-dlp is "supposed" to be set up script-wise. Good for manually messing with things and setting up a cron job to run. These scripts will assist in downloading more than just the video, like thumbnails and metadata, and comments.
- I am genuinely terrified of the Internet Archive closing down.
-
Stop using youtube-dl and use yt-dlp instead.
yt-dlp also scripts SO nicely. Take a look at this.
