Syncthing problems
I haven't been able to access https://docs.syncthing.net or https://forum.syncthing.net/ but I was able to access some of the docs via github. I think I've set it up according to the docs. The logs contain lots of messages like:
-
Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
If you are okay with rclone (and do have vps/server/whatever somewhere) then Syncthing is the thing to do that.
https://docs.syncthing.net/
- i fear to use Sincthing. It has a lot of functionalities.

All I want is a cabin in the woods and a dual redundant 50TB NAS

Backup app recommendation
I am not aware of it. You can look at their documentation or someone at r/Syncthing will be able to tell you for sure.

Show HN: Open-source obsidian.md sync server
You're not and you're actually reinventing the wheel as a couple of options for that are already available as community plugins. I've been using Remote-save for a while with a almost free private S3 bucket and encryption to sync between my computers and phone for a while.
https://github.com/remotely-save/remotely-save
It supports more than just S3 (as is listed in the README), its just what I use.

Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
There's an Obisidian plugin for direct syncing to OneDrive that works on both mobile and desktop - this keeps you from having to deal with either triggered syncs through github or the various other, painful syncing processes.

Syncthing is causing battery drain. Any free alternatives?
I didn't try any of them to be honest. But I remember seeing a couple of posts mentioning their drawbacks. With that said, you may follow this documentation on how to connect your DropBox.

Possibly a dumb question but what is the main hurdle preventing Obsidian from backing up to Onedrive from Ipad?
It can be done today. https://github.com/remotely-save/remotely-save

Advantages of Remotely Save plugin over just saving Vault inside OneDrive?
What are the specific advantages of using Remotely Save plugin compared to simply saving the vault in OneDrive?
-
Any chance Google Drive starts to be an official Obsidian backup/sync?
I use Remotely Save plugin synced with a free tier OneDrive (sadly gdrive isn't supported) and it works very well. Maybe if you not find any alternatives good enought (most of then are a bit hard to setup and maintain) and do not want to pay the official sync plugin than this may work for you as worked for me.

Using OneDrive with an Ipad
You can use Remotely Save plug-in. It is a life saver for me to sync between different devices.
-
Is there a trial offer for Obsidian sync?
I'm currently using Remotely save without problems between Windows, iPad and Android.

Im new eReader user of Koreader and last couple of days I have spent trying to come up with some best practice to upload and manage my Highlights using open source apps.
My Nextcloud instance also synchronizes my Obsidian vault so highlits after uploading are available also there on desktop. On mobile I also use Obsidian with remotely-save plugin https://github.com/remotely-save/remotely-save so I have access to all uploaded files.
