here's a repo with this goal in mind. i haven't contributed in a while, but it's still actively developed and they write good code https://github.com/alexlance/signal-message-exporter thank u/alexlance & co in the usual kinds of ways.

Issue with SMS Export
But, the note also only concerns my project's built-in XML export function, not the one used in the instructions you link. I do plan on getting the XML export function working again in the near future, but for now, if you have a problem you should really open an issue at https://github.com/alexlance/signal-message-exporter/issues.

All the history disappeared after transferring from device with history to an empty.
At the very least there are tools that allow you decrypt your chat backups and export them in JSON. So, even if importing the backup doesn't work you still have access to your message history, which is better that nothing.
