As someone who has spent quite a few hours consolidating text messages into Signal, eg: https://github.com/alexlance/sms-mms-import-to-signal this is quite a disappointing change.
Worked great for me, except it didn't bring over the media. (Had to use https://github.com/bepaald/signalbackup-tools just to have an archive of that)
