Is FontAweSomeFx still maintained?
It looks like it's not anymore. A possible replacement you could look into is controlsfx. It has a Glyph class https://github.com/controlsfx/controlsfx/blob/jfx-13/controlsfx/src/main/java/org/controlsfx/glyphfont/Glyph.java which could be a starting point. Have not used it myself yet. Also still using FontAwesomeFX
