Let’s get started. I prefer to manage my Ruby installations on my development machine with chruby paired with ruby-install. Another outstanding set of tools is rbenv with ruby-build. I highly recommend installing Ruby with one of those two sets of tools. Follow the instructions on their project’s READMEs. For this article, I’ll be running Ruby (MRI) v3.3.0.

Anyone have ideas on what the issue is? The closest error message I found searching online was linked to this post which I'm not sure is exactly the same since their error message is on a different line (line 9 vs 14) and doesn't mention openssl like my error message does.

Another option would be to use ruby-install to manually install your desired Ruby version to somewhere on your path. The downside here is that you lose the ability to switch between Rubies. This type of installation would allow you to set $GEM_HOME and $GEM_PATH however you like though.

  • ruby-install 0.8.3 has been released
    2 projects | /r/ruby | 26 Sep 2021
ruby-install 0.8.3 has been released. This version explicitly pins the homebrew openssl dependency to [email protected]. OpenSSL 3.0 was released this month and is now available in homebrew. Unfortunately, ruby’s openssl bindings are still working on OpenSSL 3.0 support, so attempting to compile any current ruby version against OpenSSL 3.0 from homebrew will result in a compilation error. Until all actively supported versions of Ruby support OpenSSL 3.0, ruby-install will continue to compile against [email protected] on macOS with homebrew.

Hopping from one distro to another with a different package manager might require some time to adapt. Using a package manager that can be installed on most distro is one way to help you get to work faster. Flatpak is one of them; other alternative are Snap, Nix or Homebrew. Flatpak is a good starter, and if you have a bunch of free time, I suggest trying Nix.

Are you using SQLite that ships with macOS, or SQLite installed from homebrew?

I had a different problem in the past with the SQLite that ships with macOS, and have been using SQLite from homebrew since.

So if it’s the one that comes with macOS that gives you this problem that you are having, try using SQLite from homebrew instead.

A running Rails application needs a database to connect to. You may already have your database of choice installed, but if not, I recommend PostgreSQL, or Postgres for short. On a Mac, probably the easiest way to install it is with Posrgres.app. Another option, the one I prefer, is to use Homebrew. With Homebrew installed, this command will install PostgreSQL version 16 along with libpq:
