This looks like solid work but I am not sure what the use-case for this is. In particular, for end users of R on macOS, why would I use this over the official distribution bundle or rig?

With rig (https://github.com/r-lib/rig) and renv you will be able to have a reproducible environment with any version of R.

Installing R 4.2 on MBP M1 Pro
I recommend using rig to install R, my experience with it is very positive and it makes it easy to manage side-by-side installations of multiple versions of R.

I’ve never tried using ‘installr’ but I recommend you give ‘rig’ a try instead. It’s working incredibly well in my experience, and I trust the expertise of its maintainer.
