As promised, I tried to make the documentation a bit more accessible, given that I don't have a doc builder. It's now all in markdown.
Try the groundhog package
With rig (https://github.com/r-lib/rig) and renv you will be able to have a reproducible environment with any version of R.
More info on how to set that up here, with an example of .devcontainer + Dockerfile that sets up a basic Data Science environment (with R and a few packages).
To be honest I don't think there's a chance to make resolvelib (or any other resolver) work with R packages because the versioned R package dependency annotation is simply insufficient. This is a problem even for Python, with its far superior package versioning. For R there is unfortunately no chance in hell to ever make this work.
