If you know how to write python, https://github.com/xavdid/reddit-user-to-sqlite can be twisted to do what you want.

This tool can download all post and comments by a specified user. Since the tool uses the API that's about to go bye-bye, it's limited to the most recent 1000 posts and 1000 comments and will stop working at the end of the month. This article explains the set-up very simply. It took me less than 5 minutes to set it up and download my post history.

This tool was effective and surprisingly fast for me, but took some tinkering to get working. Easier if one is already handy with Python and pip/pipx. YMMV.

Does PDS get around the 1000 item limit for its backups? I tried reddit-user-to-sqlite and it's missing about the first two years worth of my comments. If not, the only other option seems to be to "request my data" through reddit itself.

I got nervous that the API changes would be the end of Apollo, and thus largely the end of my Reddit use. So, I made a way to export all of my post and comment data into a searchable SQLite archive:

It can pull your recent activity from the API, but also has support for pulling data from a GDPR archive (a feature I'm very proud of).

The beginning of enshitification of discord (while 100% expected) for some reason hits harder then any other service I've used throughout all these years. It has entirely replaced social media for me. It just felt more organic to me then anything else.

So... since I've heard about the ads coming to discord, and I have looked into alternatives.

They do exist, in varying quality, and there are programs for some of them that make a "bridge" from a discord server to your new platform. It's possible to have your cake and eat it to.

Matrix looks really close, but it needs ALOT of love. I have high hopes for matrix because of the idea of it. Perhaps my lackluster experience was because I didn't choose the best client available. I'm still trying new things here.

GitHub Discussions can also be a great place for support as long as these are regularly monitored. Another option along the same lines is Discourse and the Open Source Matrix which is used by quite a few Open Source and community-based projects.

Tangential: the article notes that Telegram is an “encrypted messaging app”. While this is technically true, it's worth keeping in mind that it's not end-to-end encrypted, so it's less secure in that regard than, say, Signal or even WhatsApp. Telegram does have opt-in end-to-end encrypted one-on-one chats, but those are very inconvenient to use.

I'd love something like the Matrix [0] data model (JSON messages aggregated in an eventually-consistent chatroom CRDT) transmitted over something like simplex for metadata resistance.

Trillian mod here. There's this new thing called Beeper, works on matrix.org. It's not as the good old times, but I'm currently using whatsapp, FB messenger, discord, telegram, signal, imessage and a few more. It's not Cerulean experience, but it's... slowly improving.
