I donโt know how to begin to build up a community of this size there, but I think Lemmy could be a promising alternative to Reddit. Iโve found Mastodon to be an enriching experience compared to Twitter and especially as a platform where third party clients have flourished. I would love to see a Reddit-like community on the Fediverse as well as excellent 3rd party clients. https://join-lemmy.org/
Here's the archive on github, it's pretty stale having last been updated six years ago. To be honest my gut feeling would be to lean towards a new implementation, I bet this would be a horrible slog of figuring out what the fuck everything does.
I'm one of the devs of lemmy, a federated reddit alternative. I built an android app for it called jerboa, that's largely based on boost for reddit. But I'd love to have the help of the apollo devs!
Would it be possible to circumvent the third-party apps API and make your app basically act as a browser that just opens the Reddit website, then modify the loaded web content within your app, similar to a Chrome extension that improves Reddit on desktop e.g. "redditenhancementsuite.com"
You can use the website, on mobile or desktop. It works fine. I don't get why people think that if they can't use some 3rd party app to access Reddit they'll ... I dunno, browse the archives at gcc.gnu.org or something. There is nothing else like Reddit.
Oh hell no. Guess I'm done with Reddit. See y'all on Kbin someday.
I wrote a tool that pulls all your posts and comments into a searchable SQLite database: https://github.com/xavdid/reddit-user-to-sqlite
What is the next reddit though? I tried to jump onto voat.co, but that was a POS. Mastadon isn't cutting it, and is more of a twitter alternative anyway. Maybe somebody virtualizes a bunch of PHPBB instances (one per community)? And copies all the old discussions over?
The only option is the official web app.
