Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.

Would it be possible to build a ruby script to autopost on reddit?
Yes. You can use my ancient, and unmaintained snoo library to do it, or just interface with the API by hand, which isn't too hard. Look through the source of that lib and you should be able to figure out how the requests work.
