Why are there so many different ways to write のぼる, and what are the different nuances behind each one? (上る, 登る, 昇る)
There are free programs for reading EPWING dictionary files. The most well known one is probably qolibri, but there are a few others. You need to find the EPWING files for the dictionary you'd like to use, but you can find them for free online fairly easily.

What do people watch to learn (if they do so)?
I just read and watch things i like with Qolibri (国語辞典 app) and Anki on the side. I like movies, tv shows, manga, YT videos, forums, etc.

hello im trying to uise qolibri but upon downloading the files from github, no .exe file is visible. What do i do now?
You have cloned the repository, i.e. downloaded the source code. To get an executable file, you need to go to the Releases section (https://github.com/ludios/qolibri/releases)

If you happen to dabble in local EPWING files, there's some code to use JSONified versions of them as an alternate to the (free and lovely, but less comprehensive) JMDict. I used https://github.com/FooSoft/zero-epwing to convert to JSON.
