why isn't there a mock module for motor?
It doesn’t elegantly solve your problem because it currently also depends on pymongo, unnecessarily for you, but https://github.com/schireson/pytest-mock-resources. It spins up a real mongo server using docker (if you’re willing to eat mongo’s startup cost).
