Free games that can be replayed/played for a while
Might look at Oolite for a free lower spec alternative to Elite, if that's your jam. Plenty of mods to work with as well.
-
Elite for Emacs
If you liked Elite, you should check out Oolite [1] too. FOSS, lots of mods.

What indie space sim games have a hidden, large community?
I was surprised, when I started recording videos for Oolite, by how many people were desperate for Oolite videos.
-
Just picked this up, the journey to Elite begins!
Many, many hours playing this one to death. And the C64 version before it, and the BBC versions (tape and disk) at my friends houses. And Oolite on the Mac. And I'm a founder backer of Elite Dangerous. And...and...

space sim for resource poor PC?
In addition to the other great recommendations on here, Oolite might also be worth a try. It's free and has tons of expansions modify your experience.

Getting wake data is terrible. Which gave me an idea! What about Witchspace Ripples?
Hmm, I guess that's one way to look at it. ED is all about the freedom of choice, after all. Though I still think OP's idea is interesting. Before playing ED, I've been playing Oolite for some time, and you can actually jump into the wakes left by the ships. So, to see this (or similar) mechanic in ED would be interesting.

Pimp My BBC Micro
Strong nostalgia whenever I see the BBC Elite opening screen!
These days we can re-live it easily in the browser: https://bbc.godbolt.org/?autoboot&disc=sth%3AAcornsoft%2FEli... Although I can also recommend "oolite": http://www.oolite.org/ which is an open source modernised elite with game play kept quite faithful to the original (I'm currently hooked on this and wasting more my life trying to get that "Elite" rating all over again)

The Rise and Fall of the LAN Party
Recently, my friends and I recreated our old LAN parties. Went up to a cabin in the woods, brought some cheap network switches, and had everyone install OpenRA (https://www.openra.net/, open red alert), and had a blast, even with everyone on laptops (mac/win). You can still do this in 2024 and it's worth it!

Ask HN: What older games are you playing through?
After the movies, I wanted to experience Dune 2 again (the pirate sites have it, along with patches to make it playable on modern OSes or Crossover). It was arguably the first mass-market real-time strategy game. There's also OpenRA for C&C, Red Alert, and Dune 2K: https://www.openra.net/
I understand Square is re-making FF7 in a multi-part release over several years (not sure why it takes so long)? https://ffvii-remake-intergrade.square-enix-games.com/en-us/ Once it's all out, I might play through that again just for nostalgia's sake (and for the soundtrack, of course! Twenty years later, I still have Aeris's Theme stuck in my head from time to time)

OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
You can import those from ISOs: https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/wiki/Game-Content but the campaign is not complete afaik as it needs to be re-built in OpenRA: https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/issues/4989 (I think this is the related ticket)

Any way to play on a MacBook Pro?
Alternatively OpenRA has a bunch of C&C inspired mods: https://www.openra.net I think this way is the easiest way to get a C&C like experience on a M1 Mac right now.
