Typo correction using NLP
Regarding grammatical error correction: LaserTagger is really cool and the first paper I'd recommend you to read if you're interested in a recent machine learning approach. The code is also Open Source. There's also rule-based approaches which are (again) faster but less sophisticated like nlprule.

Spellchecker that check for hard to detect mistakes? Like confusing quite vs quiet.
I do not think any spellchecker can do this, as a spellcheck is for checking only spelling. You probably is looking for grammar tools. I cannot say which is the best, but there is. e.g, this one: https://github.com/dpelle/vim-LanguageTool
