nestedtext VS starlark

As /u/astatine said, an excellent but under-recognized alternative syntax for configuration files is NestedText, where everything is a string unless the ingesting code says otherwise, and there is no escaping needed ever.

I don't know what traits from markdown you'd hope for, but for a relatively obscure but technically excellent format, you can check out NestedText.

I recently came to appreciate and favor an alternative format called NestedText. Like YAML, indentation is used for structure, so like YAML, you may hate it.

I recently discovered NestedText, and really appreciate the design. To me, it hits the nail on the head where projects like strictyaml and hjson come very close.

I'm glad to see people experimenting with alternative document/object representations, but this one might be a hard sell: based on the README[1], it only has Python, Zig and Janet implementations so far. One of the nice things about YAML (and JSON, TOML, etc.) is that they have decently mature C, C++, or Rust libraries that other languages bind to.

NestedText

NestedText was left out. Has the feel of YaML, without all the complexity and user traps.

Starlark: Starlark is a language for describing build transformations, inspired by Python, but with features that make it suitable for embedding in software like Bazel. It can be used for configuration generation due to its capability for deterministic evaluation and expressing complex build transformations.

In the design of Starlark (https://github.com/bazelbuild/starlark), I often had to push back against new feature requests to keep the language simple. I explicitly listed simplicity as a design goal.i

Of course, the scope of the language is not the same as general purpose languages, but there's always pressure from the users to add more things. I also think many people underestimate the cost of adding new features: it's not just about adding the code in every compiler/interpreter, specifying every edge-case in a spec, updating all the tooling for the language and writing tutorials; it's also a cost on everyone who will have to read any of the code.

You can do the same in Bazel which uses Starlark for its BUILD files. Starlark is a dialect of Python so it makes it super easy to work with.
