Is there any alternative frontend for `mpv-android`?
No, but you can try another player that might be better for you like https://github.com/moneytoo/Player

MX Player automatically reads and pastes from your clipboard.
Not relevant to this thread , but I personally use 'just player' , no bullshit lightweight video player app, although it doesn't offer as much features as MX or VLC for that matter, but works for almost all videos and have never ran into any issue with it.
- can i side-load a version of vlc that supports dv?

Enhancement Request
Also I might be wrong I don't know much about coding and stuff but if it's possible then this app could rely on JustPlayer as the video player in the app. This may reduce NOVA's developer workload for video player. This app could be an awesome media library with modern design.

App suspended from Google Play for listing supported subtitle formats
The subtitles are basically adjusted every frame but you don't necessarily have to do it by hand. You can for example generate motion data with Blender or Mocha and import that into Aegisub (the software that is used to create the subtitle files).
