The ‘Wikipedia of Maps,’ Tensions Grow over Corporate Influence
Strava worked with Mapbox when they were switching over. I don't know what exactly the deal was, but Mapbox employees added a bunch of missing stuff to OSM based on Strava data analysis.

Are there any good digital atlases?
This might not be exactly what you're asking for, but OpenStreetMap is "the Wikipedia of maps." It's quite comprehensive, easy to contribute to, and is not a revenue-generating private product.

Urbanist Travel Guide to Netherlands/Europe
OpenRailwayMap has a detailed map of rail lines around Europe, a good way to see metro/tram stations across cities. OSM seems to do a decent job showing pedestrian areas in Dutch cities. Google Street View/Google Earth is hard to beat.

Why does openstreetmap.org now require cookies to show search results?
Could it have been this commit? https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/commit/8919c8c40416a70e1a5516f03e2628c5dd380d40
I usually disable cookies where they're not needed. A couple of days ago I noticed https://www.openstreetmap.org/ breaking (spinner icon when entering search query)
So why is that? I scrolled through the commits but there are so many of them that I couldn't figure out why the change happened.

The map source is Open Street Maps I believe which is an amazing legendary project, that crowd sources map data, so this explains why it is so up-to-date. I believe many humanitarian/search and rescue workers are using it in Turkey at the moment given the tragedy that has taken place.
