I built a remote for the Duplo Train and my daughters had a blast with it. 100% original LEGO pieces, too.
Ah, gotcha. In that case you probably don't need Pybricks. Indeed, you can implement a subset of LWP3. For anyone else reading this, that is this: https://lego.github.io/lego-ble-wireless-protocol-docs/

Can Lego City Powered Up trains be automated?
I couldn't find an off the shelf Flipper module, but the Lego Powered Up BLE protocol is fully documented by Lego:
https://lego.github.io/lego-ble-wireless-protocol-docs/
So it shouldn't be too hard to add one.
Keep in mind that as noted in this article, the default Powered Up Hub behavior is as a "passthrough pipe" to the host device, so just using a Flipper might be a bit obnoxious.

If the official protocol leaves you wanting, there exists 3rd party firmware for a most of the hubs that allows you to run python directly on the hubs:

The Raspberry Pi Build Hat: Create with Raspberry Pi and Lego
The color/distance sensor 88007 is in the compatibility list, so it'll work. However, the move hub 88006 is not in the list, which is unsurprising since I think it's bluetooth-only. There are already several libraries with which you can use here, like https://github.com/undera/pylgbst or https://github.com/virantha/bricknil.
What are some alternatives?
pylgbst - Python library for LEGO® PoweredUp devices
node-poweredup - A Javascript module to interface with LEGO Powered Up components.
twitch-powered-up - Interact with LEGO Powered Up elements via Twitch chat and a Raspberry Pi.
community - Filecoin community and ecosystem channels, discussion forums, and more
blockly - The web-based visual programming editor.
SwitchBotAPI-BLE - SwitchBot BLE open API
pyb00st - Python for LEGO BOOST
duplo-train-voice-control
emco - An Emergency Communication Protocol. Contains platform, protocol and tool documentation.
