It does an excellent job. The added content fits with the design philosophy the game had back when it was adding and trying out new things all the time. For example, Wights are playable and some of the most fun I've had with the game. Awful aptitudes in almost everything, but nice undead bonuses/resistances and the ability to curse their held weapon for an enchantment buff. And in top of all that, makes hundreds of new additions, while regularly merging new changes from up to date DCSS versions. You can play as a Hydra that grows a new head every level and an amulet slot every other level until becoming the Lernaean hydra with 27 heads! How exciting and awesome is that? Barony, Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup Kimchi, Tales of Maj'Eyal - there's almost nothing better than randomness, immediacy and pausability of roguelikes, but there's also so much unfulfillment after Yet Another Stupid Death when trying to play casually, even with savescumming, permadeath off and other "little" cheats,

Kimchi is a fork of DCSS. It tries to imitate the original experience from the late 00s which some players prefer.

I can personally recommend Kimchi if you prefer old DCSS. It adds back all the old races like for example sludge elves and mountain dwarfes, all the old classes and previously removed items.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup - One of the best and most popular roguelike out there at the moment. Kimchi is a fork of DCSS and tries to be closer to the original experience from back in the day which some players like better.

For a long time, most traditional roguelikes were free (although there seem to be more on steam lately). I think Brogue is a good place to start; it isn't too complicated, it has some nice quality of life stuff, cooperates with a mouse, and its pretty for its genre.

I only play community edition, and my ascensions have been lightning, conjuration, teleport and some reaping combinations. My mastery was teleport with invis/reaping support. Multiplicity weapons are good (spear, rapier) but i tend to get ambitious and play hard for a mastery and screw it up.

Your best option is Brogue (community edition), in my opinion.

Brogue is another good option if you're down with rogue-likes, can basically run on anything (& has an Android version).
