jellyfin-media-player VS Exoplayer

I use Kodi with the Jellyfin for Kodi Addon and never have this problem on AndroidTV. I’m surprised you get this issue on a Mac, though. Is that when using a browser or when using Jellyfin Media Player?

Does this problem still occur in Jellyfin Media Player? I recommend using this instead of a browser.

I'd give Jellyfin Media Player a try, it supports pretty much all the formats and also supports Jellyscrub and IntroSkipper. It is what I personally use, if you have hardware transcoding is not as big of an issue, but if you don't it either eats up your CPU or is unplayable

On what device/client are you trying to watch it on? Try it on Jellyfin Media Player on your computer. Does it work then? It should direct play.

Just to be sure, if you play the movie in something like MPV or VLC on your computer, do those same scenes exhibit this color banding? How about in Jellyfin Media Player?

There are clients you can use to direct play such as Jellyfin Media Player or Kodi with the Jellyfin for Kodi Addon or JellyCon Addon. I watch a lot of anime with various subtitle formats using Kodi on an Amazon FireStick and I never have to transcode.

I tried using the Fire TV but it has huge problems with some 4K HDR video formats that goes black screen. It is an issue reported by multiple users for Plex but it's the same for all applications on FireTV. This is the issue on github for Exoplayer: https://github.com/google/ExoPlayer/issues/11096

Haven't done video work in years, but checkout the DefaultTrackSelector and start following around in the source code. Android Studio should allow you to do this all in the IDE. It's really the only way to learn/understand this stuff.

This started happening on Android when they enabled DRM on the streams. Assuming you use a device with Android 12 or later, you can just use Race Control TV to fix the issue. With Android 11 or earlier, Race Control TV also stutters due to this issue, which can be fixed by a custom build of the the app and force-enabling the fix mentioned in the issue.
