As long as you provide a way to re-link a LGPL library upon request (statically linked or not), it's fine. GPL, AFAIK, won't allow this. Though honestly I'm very surprised the Plex clients are no longer open source. It's incredibly unfortunate. People would jump to improve it because we are tired of waiting. This was done with ExoPlayer, yet now it seems even when ExoPlayer supports the feature entirely, Plex on android will lag behind for several years.
  • Found an error reported in GitHub and the solution seems to help me as a Shield/tivimate user.

If by issue you mean transcoding / bad support, blame Google. That said, I'd rather Plex switch to mpv on android like they supposedly do on iOS which would solve basically every video issue on the planet.
  • App suspended from Google Play for listing supported subtitle formats - one of which was the ASS format
The "moron somewhere" who named their extension ASS is Google! It's their library! The app is using a Google library to list a Google owned extension in the Google Play Store and getting censored for the word THEY USED IN THEIR OWN DESCRIPTION!!!!
  • Does ExoPlayer officially support .ass subtitles or not?
    reddit.com/r/jellyfin | 2021-01-21
ExoPlayer does support only the basic properties of ASS and SSA subtitles. Fortunately contributors to the project are working on more support for the styling features: https://github.com/google/ExoPlayer/issues/8435
  • Just Player is a new, open source, minimalist, Exoplayer-based video player that gets "just the essentials" done while playing every popular video format including AV1
It uses Google's libgav1 as that's what's supported in ExoPlayer. I'm afraid that this is pretty much set in stone as probably no one will attempt to implement any other AV1 decoder. The libgav1 will be used only if there's no platform decoder, which can be available on devices since Android 10 (my OnePlus 7/Snapdragon 855 has it). I tried playing basic AV1 video on 4 year old lower mid range device (Snapdragon 625) it it was fine. But I didn't push it to its limits.

Just a curious question, is there a reason why you decided on using ExoPlayer library from Google? Nothing against it because this library is fully open sourced (iirc).
    reddit.com/r/Android | 2021-01-10
ExoPlayer is a google project specifically aimed at Android to provide a framework applications can use to offer video playback. Specifically supports things currently not possible in Android out of the box.
