3.) Plex seems to never implement their own video player or codecs. they simply use what is native to the OS/Device. For Android it uses Exoplayer. Here's the open issue for it: https://github.com/google/ExoPlayer/issues/8435

There is an option to cache videos with ExoPlayer if you modify it to do so but it only works for DASH streams not HLS streams like RD or PM use https://github.com/google/ExoPlayer/issues/420

Annoying thing is, Google doesn't seem bothered at all that a video player doesn't support one of the most common subtitle formats out there. https://github.com/google/ExoPlayer/issues/8435

  • Can the Sony Android TV Plex app show stylized subtitles correctly?

Different clients/platforms use different players, and they don't all support the same set of features. I think the Android player is a modified version of ExoPlayer, which only supports style-less ASS subtitles (which is why they can be direct played when all all styling is stripped from them). Other clients, like the desktop client, use a different player that does support ASS subtitles natively, so Plex can direct play them.
  • ExoPlayer caused video frames dropped
Your video doesn't seem to be natively supported by Exo Player but you can use external extension instead. For info.
  • Plex audio and video desync when fast forwarding
I suspect this is an issue with ExoPlayer which IIRC Plex uses on Android TV and perhaps Emby does as well. The desync effect is really annoying so I tend to use Kodi with the Plex plugin which doesn't have this problem. Kodi is open source and I think it uses native open source playback engines which have very reliable playback & seek behavior in my experience.
  • Plex just convinced me to move JellyFin from backup to primary media streamer

There have been some improvements in ExoPlayer (the video player library that we use) recently, so this should only be getting better in the future. In the meantime, we disabled SSA/ASS client support with 2.3.0 to force the server to transcode and burn the subtitles into the video stream.

As long as you provide a way to re-link a LGPL library upon request (statically linked or not), it's fine. GPL, AFAIK, won't allow this. Though honestly I'm very surprised the Plex clients are no longer open source. It's incredibly unfortunate. People would jump to improve it because we are tired of waiting. This was done with ExoPlayer, yet now it seems even when ExoPlayer supports the feature entirely, Plex on android will lag behind for several years.
  • Found an error reported in GitHub and the solution seems to help me as a Shield/tivimate user.
