hoverzoom VS omapsapp

For over 10 years that I maintain a reasonably popular cross-browser extension, I've been collecting various monetization offers. They simply don't stop coming: https://github.com/extesy/hoverzoom/discussions/670

People keep saying that. There are two problems with that, namely ① Google's own ads are easy to block using the new API and ② the new API is effective at blocking various evil attacks.

https://textslashplain.com/2024/10/13/content-blocking-in-ma... shows a ten-line ad blocker that blocks Google's ads, https://github.com/extesy/hoverzoom/discussions/670 is a list of polite email messages from people who'd like to have elevated access to browsers.

Sidenote: The "collaboration" offers come from time to time even to non-extensions projects, if they are reasonably widely used. E.g. simple tools (rather widely used suite of android apps recently sold).

Where an extension dev details offers to "monetize" his app and basically perform a bait and switch and make it malicious.

These type of offers are actually quite common. See this[0] and the discussion[1]. I try to stick with only the most popular of extensions in the hope that any malicious changes would be widespread news, but it is still a gamble.

https://github.com/mapsme/omim/ was forked in December 2020, with all new changes up to the last commit of Apr 28, 2021 merged into https://github.com/organicmaps/organicmaps/ later. MAPS.ME is alive, but they publish the source code anymore since that.

Not exactly sure what you mean. My understanding is Maps.me started trying to extract value from users (via the mentioned means) and that Organic Maps [0], took an old open-licensed fork of maps.me from before Maps.me went bad.

I currently use organicmaps.app as a nice offline back up for my traveling. I don't know how this current drama impacts organicmaps. I didn't realize that maps.me was also a contributor to organicmaps.

Have you tried https://organicmaps.app/? It has the same data source, but ui is cleaner.

I wonder if it will work on https://github.com/organicmaps/organicmaps

So far two similar solutions I tested crapped out on non-ASCII characters. Because Python's UTF-8 decoder is quite strict about it.
