Hue motion sensor
Hi OP! Welcome to the r/HomeKit side ;) there are a couple tricks to deal with this. But my personal favorite is to use r/Homebridge and a plugin to create virtual occupancy sensors called homebridge-occupancy-delay. This will let you create a virtual occupancy sensor that has a delay. It also resets that timer when triggered again. So, the goal is to tie the motion sensor to its virtual switch. When motion is detected you turn on, when not detected, you turn off. The Hue sensors have a timeout of about 10 seconds of no motion. So, leveraging that, you an get multiple triggers thereby extending the time the sensor stays occupied. Then, when the occupancy sensor detects no occupancy, have it turn off the bulbs (not the accent).

Possible uses for the motion sensor
Some excellent basic uses for motion sensors. I do similar. The only difference being that I also use mine in conjunction with Homebridge Occupancy Delay switches (see info here: https://www.npmjs.com/package/homebridge-occupancy-delay ).

iOS 15 Allows Custom Automation Names
I’m using homebridge-occupancy-delay for my occupancy sensors. Basically it combines multiple sources into one to determine if a room is occupied. For example in my living room there are three sources that will trigger the occupancy.

How to keep lights on while taking shower without motion sensor turning them off?
If you use Homebridge then you can make a virutal occupancy sensor that's essentially a fake switch with however many sub-switches inside it as you like. Tie both your motion sensor and door sensor to it so that both have to be off in order for the occupancy sensor to turn off. You can also set a delay to the occupancy sensor as well. This is what I'm currently using in my kitchen and bathrooms and it's been working really well. (https://github.com/archanglmr/homebridge-occupancy-delay)
- Trying to use motion to turn off lights, that auto turn off a few minutes after no more motion

I've had this setup for half a year. Happy to answer all questions :)
With Homebridge too, there's even more possibilities, with plugins like this: Occupancy Delay
- I created a shortcut for my bathroom light automation with 2 motionsensors. What are your solutions?

How have you guys detected occupancy in a room?
Not too sure if your idea will work, my aqara sensors switch on with detection and then remain on - however, when using Homebridge we have a plugin and configuration https://www.npmjs.com/package/homebridge-occupancy-delay (see wiring the automation section) - it works well for me, I use 2 sensors in an area - you didnt mention what system you use, but I think you could manipulate into a automation in nodeRed. Hope that helps.

Is HomeBridge the right solution for me?
Search on the main page (https://homebridge.io/) for plugins that work with the devices you can't add directly to homekit. If you find what you need then you're probably good to go ahead with it, though not all the plugins are completely reliable. Sometimes there's more than one for a given device though.
