Sounds like a good solution that would work. I also have an ASUS router and would suggest using this instead of the built in Asus integration, this one is far superior (welcome to the next stage of the rabbit hole).

Since the OP use Home Assistant like me, I'd like to add that VyOS now has an integration in HA as well.
