Migrating a Go project to a new repo?
If people want the old version, they should keep using the old import path. For the new repo, only push the latest tag (with the new module path). See the path subcommand on https://github.com/icholy/gomajor for automatically rewriting the module path.

I have never used this tool (intending to try it but not got round to it), but rsync sidekick seems to be relevant.

Correct way to backup?
rsync-sidekick should help with reorganized files, but I haven't used that myself yet. I did use hsync years ago to deal with moved files.
