Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

I’ve ran every bundled example from R 0.6.0 up to R 4.2.2 on R 4.2.2, and most examples still run
You’re right, but you might need to at least be able to install the R version that was current at the time, because sometimes there are changes in base R as well. And installing an old version of R can be tricky, especially on Linux. But for these purposes, you could check out the newly released {rang} package: it makes it easy to build a Docker image with the right version of R and packages to run an older project: https://github.com/chainsawriot/rang
